Plant Biotechnology

Norman Borlaug himself is convinced that the world has the technology to permit a population of 10 billion people to be sustained but he is concerned that farmers may be prevented from exploiting the new technology by small, vociferous, well-financed groups  of anti-science zealots. These affluent campaigners can afford to pay high prices for poorly regulated 'organic' food production. On the other hand the billion chronically poor and hungry people already in the world cannot do so and the crisis seems likely to grow as the population increases.
